DITCHLING MORRIS

Ditchling Mummers Spray 1.png

In 1986, the current Ditchling Mummers were founded, and these individuals primarily came from Ditchling Morris. They have performed a play in some format every year since, and change their play every year to ensure the audience is entertained. With your favourite characters, including St. George, The Doctor, your favourite Dragon, among the noble and valiant tipteerers involved, Ditchling Mummers take over the village every year, and showcase the tales of death and resurrection which have circulated Sussex for at least 500 years. We are very privileged to have the research conducted by Dennis Outred, which contains 18 traditional Sussex plays, and we assess these every autumn in preparation for our festive events - there is more information about these in the John Bacon Archive. Ditchling Mummers raise funds for the local hospice, St. Peter & St. James, and with your help have managed to donate thousands of pounds to this wonderful charity over the years.

On a typical Boxing Day, the day begins at 12:45 with carols performed by our talented audience under the guidance of The Shouter. During this time, you can have a sing, grab a beer from our bar (with generous thanks to one of our sponsors, Harvey's Brewery), maybe pick up a mince pie, and catch up with friends and family. After the singing, the Ditchling Mummers process into the marked Play Area, and perform their play to you; many laughs, ooh's and ahh's, and always the finest standard of acting you'll ever encounter. Once the play has finished, we are joined by our wonderful friends from Ditchling Morris, and we perform some dances, one of which is even for some of you to join in with. Once your glasses have been emptied, the Mummers begin the clearing of the play area, before eventually retiring to the White Horse pub in Ditchling, to begin a session of pub carols, tunes, and good company.

So, cancel your plans, and we'll see you on Boxing Day for this event unlike any other you've seen before... we can guaruntee it.

As always, please do NOT attempt to park at the venue.

If you are unable to attend this event in person, you can still view our online play from 2020, where we faced the issues of being unable to put on our usual large-scale event. This can be viewed below.
